I was thinking about my grandmother. We'd often sit by the fire making soft porridge, she'd often let me stir. It made me feel like I had the ability to nourish as she did.
I noticed the other day, that carved on the wooden spoon which she sent to me 6 years ago, is a symbol that could be read as my initials
I called upon the intimacy of personal history and traced the steps she may have taken to get me that wooden spoon, from my aunt's place in ave lumumba, to kenya market and back. To speak to these steps, I called my aunt, compelled by the instruction in her voice, I traced her words.

The tracing did not stop there, in watching Da Bibiene make the uji ya ugali, I wondered if these movements she used were learned from my grandmother, through her mother.
We are left daughters of the same grain, inheriting the manners of my grandmother.
